Numerous style normalizations from John:

 * Convert "return( value );" to "return value;"
 * Normalize spacing around semicolons.
 * Remove extraneous parens.
 * Split multi-statement lines into multiple lines.  (Mostly things
   of the form: "if( condition ) return;".)
